This month’s discussion: redevelopment of West End Square, featuring guest speaker Zachary Krochtengel of Sycamore Development. After a difficult year of news for Downtown, Zachary will share some good news — his historic redevelopment project near West End Station isn’t a future plan, it’s a real project that broke ground earlier this year. Per the city’s project description, West End Square Lofts is a mixed-use development on the 700 and 800 blocks of Elm Street adjacent to the West End DART station: a historic building, a historic garage, and a new apartment building totaling roughly 288,000 gross square feet, with about 20,000 square feet of retail and 205,000 square feet of apartments, a roughly half-acre pedestrian plaza, and 154 planned housing units including a portion of affordable workforce housing. The project removes nearly an acre of existing surface parking from the downtown grid, replacing it with open space and new housing.
