After three trips to Austin, dozens of visits with legislators’ offices, hundreds of phone calls, and thousands of emails, DATA, DART, and everyone else involved in fighting the DART cuts have cause to celebrate! Saturday night at midnight, we achieved total victory in the 89th legislative session!
SB 1557 and 3075 (both cutting DART’s funding by 25%) and SB 2118 (reforming DART’s governance) all had a strict deadline to be out of House committee before midnight Saturday night. However, none of these bills even got close! All three stalled out and died at the Senate committee step.
Thank you to everyone who participated in stopping these horrible bills! The next fight (the 5% GMP, which I will be writing more about shortly) is right around the corner. But for the moment, we have a brief respite. All our efforts have paid off, and we now have another 18 months to lay the groundwork to prevent this from happening all over again in the 90th legislative session.
